Christie's to auction the Rockefeller emerald: a potentially record-breaking stone with a prestigious provenance

An 18.04-carat emerald once owned by the esteemed Rockefeller family is to be sold at auction in New York next month, with an estimate of $4-6 million (£3.1-4.7 million). Described by Christie's as "among the finest emeralds to be offered for sale at auction", if it achieves its high estimate, it will be worth more than $332,000 per carat - a potential world record for an emerald sold at auction.
